Food Experiment – Pumpkin with cinnamon, Bailey’s and roasted pecans

November 28, 2011 | Filed Under Fun | Leave a Comment

I love sweet potato casserole. But it’s always made way too sweet for my tastes and usually with corn flakes or some other off-limit food.

Today I’m going to try to make something similar:

1 can of pumpkin
1 handful of roasted pecans
10 shakes of cinnamon
1 shot of Bailey’s
5 shakes of Pumpkin spice

I’ll let you know how it turns out.

“When you get older you find that people are actually drawn towards individuals with different points of view who are proud of who they are and who make interesting and different and unique choices… Stand tall. Be proud of who you are.”

The Best Green Bean Casserole Ever

November 25, 2011 | Filed Under Tips | Leave a Comment

For Thanksgiving this year, I made the best green bean casserole of all time. But I can’t take credit. The recipe came from The Primal Sophisticate.

Now, it took me forever to prepare this dish (especially since I didn’t pre-make the condensed soup base). So I can’t say I’ll make “the best green bean casserole ever” more than once a year. But damn was it good. Creamy, crunchy and totally kick-ass.

Abandonment Paralysis

November 25, 2011 | Filed Under Music | Leave a Comment

There is a fairly common human emotion that I’ll call “fear of abandonment” – and this is a perfectly grounded fear. People abandon each other. However, the response we have to the fear of abandonment can either be freeing or paralyzing.

I moved around a lot as a young kid. Around 12 times before I was out of high school. I got used to friendship abandonment (of course I was usually the one doing the abandoning). So I can resonate with lyrics that say “Everybody leaves, and I’d expect as much from you. Everybody leaves, so why, why wouldn’t you.”

Life is an adventure full of surprises. We all have these great expectations of how that adventure should unfold. And we exert tremendous amounts of energy in order to preserve stability and to fight the fear of abandonment. But I’d like to suggest something: the more you try to lock something up, to own it, to possess it… the more it suffocates, dies. Fear of abandonment is grounded in reality but life is far more rewarding when we stop tightening down, and closing ourselves off from joy. Loosen up to the freedoms of life. Smartly, wisely of course.

So yeah, I’ll say it again: life is an adventure full of surprises. You can either live wide-eyed and open to the surprises of life, prepared to engage them as they come your way. Or you can live your life in paralysis, fighting change, forcing your “great expectations” onto the world, and being sorely disappointed when the world continues to surprise you.
