Breaking News – It no longer means much to say breaking news

September 6, 2008 | Filed Under Small Talk

I’ve finally succumbed to consuming the political theater.   I don’t think that there is anything wrong with being entertained.

Sure, I think that politics are the source of the most egregious mistakes in reasoning that most of us make.   But that doesn’t mean it’s not fun.

Anyway, it occurred to me as I was consuming my daily dose of political theater today that all the major cable news companies have absolutely destroyed the concept of “Breaking News” by overusing it.  Has anyone else recognized this?

I watch the 3 major cable news networks (MSNBC, Fox News and CNN) mainly as an academic exercise in trying to understand how the American public is being fed its information.   One thing they all have in common is sensationalism.   I guess that their profits are tied to stirring emotions in their viewers.  So they all deceive their users by using the term “Breaking News” even when it was really “breaking” several hours or days earlier.

The assumption, I guess, is that most people haven’t been watching the news for the last 6 hours (like me).

Yes, I’ve become a political junkie again;-)
