My Favorite Recovery Drink
September 1, 2010 | Filed Under Small Talk
Whenever I do an intense workout my body tells me it needs to be replenished. For the longest time I was drinking various recovery drinks that were loaded with sugar, but this seemed to defeat the purpose of working out as I’d soon feel “sugar bloat” and general inflammation in my body (carb overdose). Plus I always had this lingering feeling that I was undoing the workout by feeding my body so much junk fuel.
For the last few months I’ve been using Trader Joe’s Super Red Drink Powder which really wasn’t formulated as a recovery drink but seems to do the job much better for me. It only has 3g of sugar (as opposed to the 30-50g in various other recovery drink formulations). And it’s loaded with antioxidants (8000 ORAC units). More than a full day’s serving of fruits and veggies.
A lot of people claim that chocolate milk is great for recovery, but again, milk, especially chocolate milk, is loaded with sugars and carbs, and while it certainly keeps your body from feeling fatigue, the tradeoff ends up being a feeling of bloat (again, at least for me).
As a recovery drink, Trader Joe’s Super Red Drink Powder does everything I want it to. It refreshes my body and it leaves me feeling pure and clean. And it lets me savor the post workout high (both mental and physical) a bit longer.
Lately, I’ve gotten a lot of positive comments and emails about my posts on health and fitness. Expect to see more in the future. And I’d love to hear from you in the comments!
